When you study architecture, interior architecture or interior design, you gain a highly desirable set of creative, visual, practical, and design-based skills that you can offer to potential employers. The skills you develop are also transferable to many industries, so graduates have many options when it comes to choosing a specific field of work. Let's take a look at the job outlook for architecture and interior architecture/interior design graduates

Architecture

The Architecture BA program prepares you for your future career through perfecting your creative, planning and professional skills. During the program, we will equip you with all tools needed to understand and contribute to the built environment in a socially and environmentally responsible way in any given context. Creative and critical thinking, problem-solving skills, adaptability, an international outlook, interdisciplinary experience and intercultural competence are of special importance for the program.

Urbanism

Architects need a comprehensive understanding of cities and villages in order to be able to improve the living environment. Understanding the specific conditions of a place, grasping spatial relationships and functional use are indispensable prerequisites for architectural design.

Building fabric

Architectural history is part of the architectural context. The history of a place and a building provides insights into people's lives, cultural and social contexts and building construction interrelationships

Architecture

Architects work on a wide variety of building types and are responsible for the process from design to completion. In cooperation with specialist planners, they work out structural, constructive and structural solutions and combine all issues into an architectural design. This includes knowledge of functionality and application, technical knowledge, knowledge of materials and a high degree of creativity as well as the ability to overcome challenges.

Landscape

In addition, architects should have basic knowledge of landscape planning. Inside and outside are related to each other, either through direct connections or in the form of views.

Interior Architecture / Interior Design

Interior designers/interior designers shape people's living space. The tasks are varied and encompass all facets of human life. By changing the existing space, the planner combines the ideas of the users with functional, technical and building law requirements to form a spatial whole. The created, specific atmosphere influences the living environment of the user. The interior designer develops and supervises the project from the first idea to completion

Residential buildings

Design decisions have an impact on people's life. The spatial arrangement promotes and discourages a certain use of the space. Therefore a sense of space, design skills and technical knowledge as well as organizational talent is required to develop interior projects.

Workspaces

When developing workspaces, workplace guidelines, specific work processes and design issues must be taken into account. When designing a workplace, in particular the requirements for adequate lighting, ventilation and functional requirements are combined with design aspects.

Retail Design

A retail designer shapes the appearance of a shop. The identity of the brand is implemented spatially and combined with functional requirements and building regulations. As a result, a holistic appearance for the respective shopfitting is created.

Exhibition design

An exhibition designer develops the framework for an art exhibition or a specific product for a given exhibition period. This can be an exhibition stand or an art exhibition. The respective exhibition theme is worked out in terms of content and implemented spatially.

Health

The planning of health centres, clinics, medical practices, hospitals and care facilities is a further specialization in the field of interiors. The aim is to create contemporary spaces and to achieve positive spatial experiences for patients and residents. The medical requirements for the facilities must also be taken into account, as well as any special requirements of the residents.

Other industries that employ interior architects/interior designers include:

● Hospitality

● Cultural spaces and entertainment

● Transportation

● Stage design

The work of interior architects/interior designers:

The interior is deliberately designed in such a way that it adapts to the respective requirements. Changing working and living environments require spatial adaptation. By responding to these changing conditions the new interior forms a connected whole. The activities taking place in the room thus form the interior.

Spatial experiences

Through shaping spaces, interior architects/interior designers create a multi-sensory experience that incorporates the built space, people, context and purpose, by creating a specific atmosphere

This atmosphere is developed by composing the building elements. The influence of light and shadow, the choice of colour and the selection of material resonate in the canon. A space of possibilities opens up, which offers a platform for people to live together for example in a space of encounter and exchange.

Typical work environment

We have discussed the job outlook for architecture and interior architecture/interior design graduates, but where will they be employed? It depends on the job, but typical work environments include:

● Architecture and interior architecture studios

● Construction companies

● Building materials industry
