Dezeen has revealed the architecture longlist for Dezeen Awards 2022, which features over 5,400 of the recent world's best architecture projects for the fifth edition of the Dezeen awards program. Among the world's best architecture, it also celebrates interiors and design as well as studios and individuals producing the most outstanding work.
The architecture longlist spotlights projects from various fields, such as housing, building, rebirth and landscape.
Among the numerous projects from over 90 countries, “The Gathering Place” – a major public artwork project for Scotland, which was co-created by Prof. Karsten Huneck, Head of the BA Architecture program at Berlin International was longlisted as well.
Together with his partner Bernd Trümpler from KHBT and the team of Sans façon they used the opportunity to revisit the river’s social role within the fabric of the city. Having the task to create an artwork that „re-connects the city with the river, drawing out its stories, engendering a sense of place and creating access to the river“, they created a sense of place that draws full attention to the nature and character of the River Ness.
This project creates a sense of place that draws your attention to the nature and character of the River Ness. Framed on both banks, the simple contour of local "Clashach" stone transitions from a bench to a pier that offers views upstream in the direction of Loch Ness and back towards the castle and heart of the city. After necessary flood defenses were installed in the city, access to the river’s edge was further impeded. The project was an opportunity to define a space for citizens and visitors to access and spend time with their river. The work defines a destination to celebrate this sense of place, to interact with salmon anglers – who, for over 100 years, have animated the river – and a place for all to enjoy the natural theater of the river.
